If you're an easily offended pussy, just check out now. If you're some PC fruitloop that believes we're all special snowflakes and that everyone deserves a fucking unicorn ribbon, don't continue reading.
You know why? Because you're going to sound like a bigger asshole than I do in this article with your sniveling millennial generation whine fest in some way, shape, or form. Yes, you fucking will.
The last few weeks of "news worthy" tripe has been littered with, of course, a fat chick that was slathered on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.
Yes, I called her a fat chick. I hope you're fuming. How does it feel to be so weak that mere words on a blog could offend your delicate sensibilities?
Here, let me narrow you down. If that pisses you off or gets you in some ranty huff, then you probably fit into a particular category.
1. You're a fat chick.
2. You're a dude that likes fat chicks. Which in most cases means, you're probably rotund as well.
3. You're a femnazi, who believes that beauty comes in all sizes and that body positivity is some kind of "real movement".
4. You're a hipster.
5. You have poor taste.
6. You think this chick has "curves." Rolls, while technically create curves, are not the same as a curvy woman.
7. Someone who thinks I'm asshole (99% of the population).
8. A male feminist.
9. You're one of those "who are you to judge?" types.
10. All of the above somehow combined in the most grotesque kind of way.
People keep saying shit like "who cares?" or that "this is not a big deal."
On the surface, I'd agree. But the fact is, we've been heading down this road for quite some time and it has a far reaching impact than people want to really acknowledge.
And what road is that I'm speaking of?
The one where the minority essentially shames the majority into acceptance of mediocrity, scorns discipline, hates winners (participation trophies anyone?), and believes that equality is some kind of utopia that everyone must be forced to live in.
It's the people that think flipping burgers should pay $15 an hour (an entry level job) and that CEO's make too much money, but don't give a shit that entertainers make millions and millions, while the CEO's are the ones creating jobs, growing businesses, and giving people a means to support themselves.
You're willfully ignorant, lazy, and woefully uneducated about how the world works.
Let's actually call this Sports Illustrated shit for what it really is.
Attention.
It worked too, didn't it? I mean, here I sit writing about this bullshit.
Either people lined up to support an overweight chick as a cover model, or people scorned them for the exact same reason. There wasn't much room for middle ground here. So let's get past the fact that this was some kind of real support movement for fatties. This was all about publicity. No different than Bruce Jenner essentially dressing up in drag (he never got his parts chopped off, so he's essentially a drag queen).
There are lots of Bruce Jenner's in the world, i.e. men who are transgender that struggle with their identity, and probably go through some exceptionally difficult times the rest of us will never understand. But Brucie did what he did for no other reason than to hype his upcoming reality show. It wasn't about courage. It wasn't about bravery or furthering the acceptance of being transgender. It was about money, and television ratings. Fuck him, and fuck the media for shoving him down our throats like he donned some badge of courage by "embracing his true self"....that cost him like half a million dollars.
But I don't wanna get off on that shit.
There's no real difference here. SI isn't dumb. Few people pick up a magazine off the rack anymore due to this thing called the interwebs. All the info you want, is right there at your disposal of the Google machine.
SI didn't do this to promote body positivity or health at all sizes. And you're fucking stupid if you think that's what it was about.
Sure, they hid behind that but the fact is, it was a genius move to put a fatty on the cover in order to sell magazines due to controversy. I'm sure it worked. God knows all you chubbers were just fawning over the fact that they put a fat girl in a swimsuit on the cover of a fucking Sports magazine who has never played a sport in her life, and as far as I can tell, never turned down a meal.
Look, Ashley Graham has a beautiful face. But body wise, I can walk into any Home Depot in America and find a female working in aisle 8 that has a similar body.
Still trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be hot and bothered about |
It's also a massive setback in regards to the on going problem of obesity we're facing in this country. One that continues to gain traction with phrases like "fat shaming" and such and the pushing of plus sized women onto to us ("STOP! I CAN'T BREATHE!") as something we MUST ACCEPT, is sexy.
It's not. I don't. Sorry not sorry.
Mind you, despite the fact that I'm using words like "fattie" in this article, I don't support fat shaming.
Yes I get that thus far, this whole piece reads....feels down deep in your gender neutral soul, like fat shaming from hell. But me pointing out that someone is obese, or overweight, is just stating the obvious. If I make an observation that a blue Prius is blue, I'm doing nothing more than making a factual statement. If I say that only smug fucks who think they are making a difference in the environment drive a Prius, well that's an opinion. Mostly based in fact, but it's still an opinion.
I'm not shaming anyone, regardless of how offended you are right now.
I do have a point in all of this, which will take a long time to get to, because I can't condense my writing to save my fucking life, and this is my god damn blog, so I don't have to.
Where was I?
Oh yeah. Fatties.
However, I do not endorse "health at any size" or support obesity acceptance. But I've blogged about that in the past and SHOWED MEDICAL STUDIES THAT HEALTH AT ANY SIZE IS A GOD DAMN MYTH!!! So before you claim it's possible, or that you're fat and healthy, it's a lie.
Stop. I mean, on the SURFACE, you should know this is a lie.
"Health at any size."
ANY size. See, when you use absolutes like that, it's going to be false.
Health at any size. That means you can be healthy at 55 pounds as an adult of normal height, or healthy at 900 pounds as an adult of normal height.
"You're being extreme, Paul!"
HEALTH AT ANY FUCKING SIZE! It's become the tribal chant for those who have no investment in obesity control. So I'm taking it for what it is. And what it is, is wrong.
http://news.health.com/2015/01/05/study-debunks-notion-of-healthy-obesity/
“All types of obesity warrant treatment, even those which appear to be healthy, because they carry a high risk of future decline."
I will give her points for honesty....I think that's a "her" |
But listen, let's get to my real issue here.
I'm not going to support the furtherment of mediocrity or endorsing a complete lack of discipline in regards to someone's health when I'm opposed to those very things (if you hang in here long enough I'll contradict myself on that stance in just a bit) and this the path we're headed down. As a country. Yes, we fucking are.
How in the hell do we get to a place where for decades past, what we celebrated were people who went above and beyond to accomplish incredible things, that may have seemed borderline impossible, to celebrating that of putting an overweight chick in a swimsuit on a magazine cover and acting as if she's brave because of it?
So I'm going to BOLD this next part, because this is my MAIN point in all of this.
This isn't about fat shaming. This is about the representation of something we used to stand against. Which was that we applauded people who were exceptional, instead of applauding the norm, or average. We applauded the near unattainable by those who dared to risk everything to achieve it. Not the "I woke up like this" bullshit.
A few years ago, a woman who got into incredible shape after having a few kids, blogged or wrote about how she trained really hard, and dieted really hard after the birth of her children, to get back into shape as quickly as possible.
Instead of admiring the level of discipline and effort that went into her caring about how she looked and felt, she was ridiculed by women all over the net who were too god damn lazy to do anything but stay fat as fuck post pregnancy and lean on it as an excuse.
The contrast here is striking.
People who go above and beyond, to accomplish something worth admiring are shamed due to the obscene degree of insecurity by those who lack the effort, willpower, and courage to follow suit.
Those same people stand up and applaud like seals at Sea World for fish in support of women like Tess Holliday, who has spent her life looking like she's put buffets out of business.
Hard work and effort is now frowned upon. Mediocrity or even laziness is now pushed to the forefront and shoved in our faces that we need to be accepting of it so that everyone can feel good about themselves.
Well fuck your feelings. And fuck your body positivity voice.
Truly, the lazy excuse makers are winning the social war of what is to be accepted, and what is not. And what cannot be accepted is anyone who dare go above and beyond what the lazy are capable of, and receive accolades for it.
Shit, I've even been seeing this nonsense in the fitness industry. Women who are supposed to be involved in...you know....fitness, letting themselves go, and posting up pics at 30% bodyfat talking about how they aren't ashamed of their body. To help give other women "strength" to feel good about being lazy as fuck.
Look, I'm not saying you have to be "ashamed", and you don't have to stay in "show shape" year round.....but your lack of discipline shouldn't be applauded either. And one thing I'm sick of is reading how "courageous" it is for these women to do so.
We have watered down the words "brave" and "courageous" so much that we're at a point where women get called brave for posting pics of themselves out of shape. It used to be reserved for medal of honor winners, firefighters, or anyone who put their lives at risk for the sake of others with no personal gain involved.
I saw some shitty article a while back about fitness women who put up pics of themselves "out of shape" and read a comment in regards to it "I see nothing but strong women." They were called brave for doing so.
You posted a pic of you out of shape. Clearly, the pinnacle of bravery.
"Women are objectified all over the world for how they look, Paul. The point was for them to stand against that be proud of their body enough to show it even if they didn't look perfect."
Hey, I got it. Believe it or not, I'm really not THAT stupid. I'm stupid in a lot of ways, but I understood the point. And I still fucking laughed.
I laughed because it's not brave, and it's not courageous. You think because someone opens themselves up for criticism that they are being brave and courageous?
Fine. Then I'm fucking Audie Murphy up in this bitch. Because what do you think me writing a piece like this, that opens me up for hate filled criticism is?
I sort of got you in a box right now, don't I?
Just because you put yourself in a position of possibly being judged for how you look, or open yourself up to being criticized, doesn't make you a hero and it doesn't make you brave. If that's the case, then bodybuilders everywhere are the most heroic and courageous fuckers to ever live. Because they diet and train for months on end, only to stand on stage practically naked and have a whole panel of people criticize what they look like and tell them what all of their shortcomings are.
Christ, you can't write "I like vanilla ice cream" somewhere on the net without someone calling you a piece of shit for it. The net has made it so that every picture, opinion, article, video, etc has open season on it for criticism across the board. Since that's the case, we sort of need to reevaluate the fact that we've let the words "bravery" and "courage" get dumbed down to include overweight people in swimsuits making millions of dollars for having some pictures taken of them.
I'm speaking from experience here. As a guy who was too fat for too long, and in retrospect became far too lazy and undisciplined, I worked my fucking nuts off to get into single digit bodyfat now. There was nothing difficult about eating 20 doughnuts and pounds and pounds of candy every weekend for years on end. It took virtually no effort at all. Level of effort was literally fucking ZERO. It was fun. Courage and bravery not required.
What took effort, hard work, discipline, and willpower?
Losing all of that god damn fat and training harder than I had in the last decade. And I'm not saying I need accolades for it. I had a huge wake up call over a year ago about my blood work and the first thing I thought was "I don't want to die young, and leave my kids grieving because their father was an undisciplined, lazy fuck."
And I had been. There. That's ME owning it. My own lack of discipline, and my own lack of effort. And guess what? It caught up to me. I went against the very thing that I got into lifting and learning about proper eating for in the first place. And I was paying the price for it health wise.
But we keep lowering the bar.........
For fucks sake, there's even a division under the fitness umbrella now where you wear fucking tank tops and shorts and the women even wear evening gowns!
WTF IS THIS?
People thought that men's physique - with board shorts - was bad? You wear a shirt and dresses in this mother fucker. Any "man" that participates in this shit should be forced to do the evening gown round as well. Might as well, you pansy.
People are going to read this and think I'm a dick (I mean most do already and that's ok), but it's because they are missing the point.
We keep devolving into the acceptance of mediocrity as a "great standard". And we keep creating these paradigms and situations so that people who don't want to work really hard to achieve something exceptional, can be exceptional at being really average.
"You're the best mediocre person of this bunch! Well done!"
But let's not single out the women here. There's a movement starting for young males too. You know, so that they don't grow up with poor body image due to the fact that G.I. Joe has just become way too fucking jacked over the years.
Apparently, before and after his tren cycle |
Which led me to this piece of shit article.....
http://www.newsweek.com/wheres-ken-abandonment-men-body-positivity-430416
It's not a joke. And yes, it's about Ken dolls being too god damned buff and is harming young males body image.
First off, I don't remember ever playing with a fucking Ken doll. The young girls did. I certainly don't remember seeing one and feeling bad about my body. Not once. Ever. Ever.
If they wanted to take a stance that made sense, they could say that Ken got more jacked over time and it's making young women believe the ideal man has broad shoulders, ripped abs, and is good looking.
Oh wait, that IS what women want and get wet about. Fuck, I coulda had a V8!!! All this fucking time, it's that god damn Ken doll that have fucked women up about what the ideal man looks like.
It's why on the cover of every romance novel there's some dude with broad shoulders and ripped abs about to sexually destroy the woman he's clutching in his arms.
There's not a chick in the history of the fucking universe that has developed carpal tunnel in her wrist due to self pleasure over some fat, beer bellied chump with a fucking fishing hook in his baseball hat, rocking a Phillips 66 shirt.
She isn't getting wet over some extra regular mother fucker |
Please stop |
But the concept of pushing ourselves to look as close to being a real life action hero was something that kept us going back to the gym. It's what made us buy Muscular Development and Flex. Because real life He-Man looking mother fuckers were on the cover. Not Bob, who works at AutoZone.
And then people want to say we shouldn't look to these people as our inspiration or as role models.
And that's bullshit too. So here comes in this fucking side rant you never expected with the path I was taking you down. It's like that fucking mountain lion that comes out of the bush that kills your kids right there in front of you while you were taking them on a stroll through the park. Then "BAM!".
Day ruined.
Look, that's a nice sentiment but it's not reality. I'm talking about the role models thing, not your kids being killed by a mountain lion.
"Parents are supposed to be role models! Not athletes!" they retort.
You're right. As a parent, you should be a great role model for your children, AND AND AND you should also point them in the direction of OTHER GREAT ROLE MODELS.
Jesus Christ jumped on a life raft, no one ever said you could only have one role model. When did role model selection become so fucking limited?
"Ok kids, here are your role models. You get to pick just one, so make sure you're positive about it before you do. Billy, that's Hitler god dammit, you can't pick him! The fuck is wrong with you?"
Role model selection, like it or fucking not, is not limited in any way, shape, or form. I love the writing of C.S. Lewis. He's a great "role model" as far as authors go. Dorian Yates was my favorite bodybuilder. I loved his work ethic and the discipline he had in the craft (uh oh, there's those fucking words again). A man who is one of my best friends now, Ed Coan, was a huge role model for me. Charles Poliquin, another one of my best buddies now (yes I'm name dropping, suck my fucking nuts), was my mentor through his writing and training methods when I was growing up.
But I played music for 20 years. Greg Bissonette was a role model. As was Tommy Lee (this was before the sex tapes! I'm talking about as a musician!). And Neil Peart (I don't think he did any sex tapes, and if he did they would be very technical in nature).
And like it or not, when a young man or young woman is working through finding themselves in this world and in their life, they will and do often find role models that they look up to and respect for different reasons. This is perfectly normal. They can look at their hard working mother or father and respect and look up to them for being a hard worker, and great parent, but they may not want to follow in their footsteps in regards to other aspects of their own life. So naturally they will gravitate IN THAT REGARD, to someone who is a representation of what they might like to accomplish.
"Yes Paul, and they may look to a plus sized model as someone as a role model as well! Ever think of that, asshole?"
YES! I FUCKING DID! Which is why I wrote all of this bullshit!
Thank you! Thank you for making my point!
The generation of lazy, PC, overly sensitive fuckwads are finding role models in people who have no discipline, no work ethic, feel entitled to everything, and often find fame for doing things that require nothing more than to get banged by a B grade rapper on a homemade sex tape.
This is the person, dear parent, that you want your children to aspire to be like?
We have propped up the wrong people for all the wrong reasons for a while now. Making people famous for literally doing nothing, and then our youth sees this shit, and aspires to be like........WHAT?
I don't know. How to be like Paris Hilton? Famous for nothing. Kim Kardashian. Famous for a sex tape.
Plus sized models. Famous for being overweight with a pretty face?
When about an Eric Berry? A guy who overcame cancer to come back and become an ever better player than he was before. Why the fuck isn't he on the cover of shit everywhere? That's fucking inspiring. That is something that can resonate with kids about how to overcome adversity, and come back stronger from it. Why wasn't HE on the cover of SI? With the fact that we have so many people dying from cancer, Berry represents the embodiment of overcoming the potential of an early grave, only to come back better and stronger from it.
Kicked cancer's ass. Won comeback player of the year. Role model. |
But fuck that. Where's that plus sized model? That's fucking inspiring!
I want my girls to see me as a role model. But in the context of what that should be. The kind of man they would want to marry. As a great father, provider, great teacher, mentor, and protector.
"Well, then you need to work on being less judgmental and blah blah blah".
Shut up.
I love my girls more than anything in the world, and care about their health too. I sure the fuck wouldn't be telling them to have a positive body image if they were headed down the road to obesity. I would tell them they needed to eat better, exercise, and take care of themselves.
I would talk to them about discipline, and hard work, and what it REALLY fucking takes to have success in this life in anything you are going to pour yourself into. I would point them towards people who have accomplished incredible things, in spite of all the odds stacked against them along the way. And remind them that at times, life will seem very unfair, unjust, and that the people who accomplished incredible things almost always had to do so against tremendous odds. And overcoming the odds, is what makes it exceptional. To not lower their standards. To not buy into the acceptance of mediocrity. That even if they can't be the best at what they do, to give their best regardless of the situation. Even when it sucks ass. Because life is going to suck ass early and often. And the difference in the people who go on to make the best of it, and the best of themselves, are the ones that rise to the occasion and welcome the challenge.
I won't make a difference in the fucking world. I'm just writing on a blog.
But I won't teach my kids that they deserve participation trophies, or that they are entitled to a god damn thing, and that the only things you deserve are those you work to earn, keep, and hold on to.
Fuck your entitlement. And fuck your body positivity bullshit. Fuck propping up your millennial heroes and their mediocrity.
To quote a movie that is vastly overrated.........

Too long, didn't read.
ReplyDeletego fuck yourself then
DeleteAnd here we have a prime example of the type of fat (most likely) lazy fuck who can't even take the time to read the article but has to comment. No one gives a shit what you think, chump.

Absolutely brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI think we've watered down the word "brilliant" to include people who are too lazy to learn how to write well. We've spent the last two decades building a society where it's okay to get in shape and then give yourself a ribbon for acting like an asshole who thinks he's better than everyone else. I'm sick of society telling people that just because they can use a computer and type a sentence, that their "opinions" about other people's bodies matter. Too bad there's not a magazine out there looking to feature mediocre middle aged men so mind fucked with their own body issues that they feel the need to talk about how much more disciplined they are than everyone else. They could put this asshole on the cover. And, while you can't be "healthy at every size" you CAN be an asshole at every size. Just because you acknowledge upfront that you're an asshole, doesn't mean that other people should join you in your asshole views of women's bodies and just accept that it's okay to live life as an asshole. Assholes should work to be less assholesish because I say that being an asshole is not okay, no matter what message modern society gives you that makes you think it is.

ReplyDeleteThis is by far the truest, most honest and worthy article i've read in the past couple of years. The butt hurt fairies won't ever understand.
ReplyDelete"Fuck your entitlement. And fuck your body positivity bullshit. Fuck propping up your millennial heroes and their mediocrity. "
Gold
ReplyDeleteFunny thing.
ReplyDeleteI still have not heard of a single plus sized male model.
It is like mediocrity is not something men plan to accept very soon. Hurt feelings be damned.
Double standards brother, fat women should be accepted for being who they are ? Then why are fat men called ''disgusting'' by the same ones who shout for fat acceptance ? I mean a well-shaped man would be attacked for being judgemental for turning down a ''woman'' than looks like a rhino with acne, but a woman turning down a fat man would be ecouraged to look for ''something better'' and criticise the man for his looks!
DeleteDouble standards.
DeleteFat women would be ecouraged to be who they are, but fat men would be called ''disguisting'', I'm tired that kind of bullshit!

DeleteGreat post. Wish there were more people with this outlook.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. Nothing but truth, and political- correctness is killing the USA.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the Oscars was one giant sjw circlejerk.
Good read.
ReplyDeleteAmen good sir.
ReplyDeleteYes! Coming from a fat man trying to lose weight!
ReplyDeleteThank you jason blaha. for bringing me here
ReplyDeleteThank you jason blaha. for bringing me here
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing this! Everything is spot on. Glorifying people's bodies when they are in terrible shape (either too skinny or too fat) is destructive and it is getting ridiculous. I'm all for giving people confidence, but I am also for giving them the kick in the pants and motivation to be healthy. I attend and help at a women's boxing class and we have all shapes and sizes there. Some women are nervous about coming because they feel too out of shape...and some use that as an excuse. I always tell them, we all start somewhere, but make sure you start and make sure you follow through. Being healthy isn't just about image, it is about being around for the people who love you and BEING that great roll model.
ReplyDeleteParents should WANT to be in shape because they WANT their kids to be healthy. My husband is a straight up GI Joe STUD and worked hard to get that way through chronic pain and a neck and back injury...he is a Marine and he is my hero. (Let me pause to take a breath, that man is so dang handsome.) We made a pact that, if either of us started to get unhealthy, we wouldn't just lay down and accept that crap, we would motivate each other to change it and get better. While I would love him if he looked like a schlub, I wouldn't encourage that behavior nor would I accept that he couldn't do anything about it. Out of love, I would get his hot butt moving so he could be a good roll model for our children and so he would be around for his family as long as he could.
So, thanks again for writing this. There are many who will hate it, but maybe those are the people who need to go get some blood work done and figure out if they want to be around in ten years or not.

Massive shoutout to Jason blaha, for bringing this article to my attention
ReplyDeletebrilliant, funny and sadly so fucki*g true!!
ReplyDeleteI need a tl;dr
ReplyDelete"fuck your fucking fat ass you fat fucker"
DeleteThank you for this article.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%. I have been shamed for being in shape. I have been called a skinny bitch just for not being lazy. I am 51 years old, weigh 118 pounds, and have been wearing a size 4 for 30 some years. Like my son said, who showed me this article, being in shape now a days makes you a minority. I have been criticized for exercising and eating right which makes no sense. Like you said, it is from insecure people that criticize the ones in shape. My doctor told me I am the healthiest patient he has which is weird because I am 51. And being fat isn't genetics. It is learned behavior. I could says more, but I don't have time. I am glad my son showed me this article. I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteIncredible article by the way. Couldn't be more true. I'm not sure if the movement has started in the US but here they're trying to even take out keeping score in kids sports....yeah you read that correctly...a competitive past time, 1 team against another, with no way of knowing who won because well you know fuck it...everyone wins! Just brutal and clearly a movement started by the last picked kids in school gym class that are still buthurt years later.
ReplyDeleteYour rant is cute and all, but how do you explain the fact that your body is unattainable without drugs (trust me, buddy, with those insertions, you'd barely look like you lift) and you're lying to young men that it's just their laziness that's keeping them from being IFBB pro level jacked?
ReplyDeleteI was 250 pounds relatively lean completely natural before I ever took a thing. You're an excuse maker. Just like I wrote about. And I've never lied to anyone about being an IFBB pro. Either you have the genes for it or not. Drugs won't make you an IFBB pro. Post with a real name or shut the fuck up.
DeleteDo you mean in the sense that not everyone is physically able to reach that point because of genetics, or just because not everyone has the right mentality?
DeleteGenetics george, obviously.
DeleteYou're a moron if you think you can get a great physique by taking drugs and not putting in the work...most people on gear train harder and eat better than those who don't.
DeleteAwesome!!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely perfect. This was my first time reading your blog. I will be back.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully written. Thank you so much for this.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully written. Thank you for this.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with everything. Good article.
ReplyDeleteFuck yeah, this shit needs to be said!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd who are you without your drugs? Nothing! What kind of a man are you who grows female breasts? What kind of man needs operations to remove his bitch breasts. What kinda man has to take female breast cancer drugs lol you enjoy the sex change process. What kind of man enters bikini contests for other men to view.? At least the girl is real. Any fool can do what you do, steroids put muscle and strip fat off people in hospital beds, you didn't achieve one thing with your body apart literally feminising yourself. Remove all the synthetic testosterone and what the hell do you really look like?
ReplyDelete0/10 would not read again
DeleteAt least put some thought into your trolling
Go eat a bag of Lexington STeel dicks.
DeleteMan its possible to get big naturally.... Look at the pre-drug greats like Steve Reeves.
DeleteAbsolutely 100% real amd honest. I forgot those things existed. You're so brave and courageous for writing this. Lol
ReplyDeleteGood stuff brother. Let 'em know, then(hopefully) make them think on thier own... *drops mic*
Agreed 100%. Bring the sheep to the water and pray they drink. It's all you can do.
ReplyDelete"You're so brave and courageous for writing this" lmao.
Keep it up. Need more honest in this world.
We need to stop promoting obesity. I don't believe in Health At Every Size either. Good read. It takes hard work to look good and people should strive for it. I agree so much that the word brave has been washed and used so much, it's become meaningless.
ReplyDeletebrave isn't posting an out of shape photo online. Brave isn't wearing a crop top when you're 200 lbs. This world is congratulating fat people for overeating and lack of self control. Hell, a normal sized person was booted off an airplane recently because it was over the weight limit. They could have chosen two obese people to get rid of, but they didn't. There's a lot of walking on eggshells to spare fat people's feelings and I for one am tired of it. I grew up in the 80s and 90s where morbid obese was basically non-existant. It's pathetic where we are now. People need to learn health and fitness and stop being applauded for accomplishing NOTHING.
Great read. It's time we put our foot down and stand up to obesity. How can it be so bad that it's become an epidemic? Oh yeah, because we need congratulating fat people for accomplishing nothing.
ReplyDeleteWe keep saying size doesn't matter and how fat you are has nothing to do with health. It's bullshit and I see poor doctors, nurses and EMT workers every damn day dealing with patients too big for normal sized ambulances and gurneys. When will enough be enough?
When will we understand that our society needs to do better?
So many people are tossing out words like brave when it means shit now. People like Tess are being celebrated and getting a modeling contract for what? For overeating and having no self-control?
It's frustrating especially as a woman who wants to look good and stay in shape by eating right and working out a few days a week. I see too many obese woman in crop tops, flaunting their guts and acting like the world owes them someone. For what?
I hope one day soon, very soon, we can see how the obesity crisis is affecting us and we should begin to fatshame. Fat shame and actual do more to educate people about fitness and health instead of giving them a pat on the back and another hamburger. We are sabotaging our damn future by allowing people like Tess to be a role model and putting fat women on the cover of SI.
Paul, You hit the nail on the head. Thank you for taking the time to write this, and subjecting yourself to ignorant lazy assholes that this world is filled with. Its just so easy to not care about yourself and whine and ask people to accept you. But its all ass backwards. You should watch this clip of Craig Ferguson who claims he has figured out what is wrong with this world haha.

ReplyDeleteNo but seriously great article that's sure to piss off most people with its brutal and unrelenting honesty. Thank you for having the balls to post this.
Have you ever thought about thoe with eating disorders? While most cases aren't about PURELY weight and looks, it does come into play.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of disorder forces you to eat too much? If there is one its all bullshit excuses from the weakminded. If that kind of illness is real its either way a super low part of the population which is suffering from it. Fuck your PC bullshit, honestly. There's no "disorder" that forces you to eat too much. You let it happen. No one else.
DeleteNever used this site before, never heard of you before, but this article is simply incredible. I'm posting this to Facebook and will quote this article religiously for confrontations to come. The acceptance and praise of mediocrity and unhealthy lifestyles is fucking stupid and everyone who contributes to it should feel like a piece of shit for encouraging the degeneration of society. I'm lucky that I live in the DC area where this stuff is relatively sparse, but the fact it still exists as prevalently as it does even in one of the most fit districts in America shows how dogshittily our standards have devolved. Thank you for writing this. Anger fuels some of the most profound philosophies.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to mention the literary ingenuity of that intro. You said so many things with so few words. Journalists could learn a lot from you.
You took the words out of my mouth, man!!! Absolutely on point! I was litterally screaming and knocking my table while reading this because I realised how much this is acutally pissing me off. Whenever I tell my lazy ass ''friends at school'' that I don't drink, but I work out hard six days a week instead, they tell me I don't have a life. When someone fucking say they NEVER work out and they eat bacon EVERY DAY people laugh about it like it's cool and it get's accepted. Or my one classmate who's the laziest fuck ever who drinks and smokes at the age of 16, every week and people act about it like it's cool. It's digusting. Peace out.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! And to the point the "but steroids" whiny bitch made.... I'm seeing more and more of this online. Any big, strong, lean guy... steroids.... Maybe they do use. maybe they don't. Regardless, he's putting in some work you keyboard jockey! No man over the age of 18 needs steroids to be 200+ lean or squat 400 lbs. or to be less than 20% body fat. It takes a little work though! And it's always the guy that, to borrow a phrase from Charles, has an eleventeen inch arm. No natural guy that weighs 220lbs. - 250 lbs and is pretty lean (<15%) is bitching and moaning about somebody else being a little leaner, a little stronger, or a little more muscular than themselves. Why? They're busy working and doing shit, accomplishing something. But people afraid to put in the work, whether it's the work itself that scares them or the realization that their training theories they spout on 16 different forums are crap, make up excuses beforehand (I.e., "steroids") so that when they fail it's ok... or so that they won't fail, they don't even have to try.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, if anyone wants to know the truth about "roads..." Most guys that use, aren't the big guys with biceps veins the size of surgical tubing. The majority are wormy little shits with poor genetics, poorer work ethic with their daddy's credit card who are literally just trying to look like they go to the gym when they wear a t-shirt or go to a club wearing a collared shirt that's 2 sizes small. SEC football players aren't on gear! Why? They
re genetic badasses. 6'3" 240lbs running a 4.5 40yd coming out of high school. The division III non scholarship guys at the College of Overpriced Useless Liberal Arts degrees is taking juice, and he thinks it's all worth it when he bench 315lbs for a triple! I.e., the weight the SEC guy warms up with after 2 hours sleep from getting baked last night... One out of every million users is a genetic freak, and a genetic freak using... yeah, looks like a genetic freak using... he still put in the work in the gym. Guys who put in work in the gym don't care who uses or not, they're busy getting something accomplished.
This became long and rambling, but my point is, to quote Dick DeVenzio, "Excuses are for losers."
Or as paraphrased by Sean Connery in "The Rock," "Your best? Losers are always whining about their best! Winners go home and fuck the prom queen."
Rant over, apologies Paul... Again, good stuff...
Ignorance(SEC football players aren't on gear)... check.
DeleteDelusions(250-pound lean natural dudes)... check
Animosity toward people with college degrees... check.
Do you even lift?
Do you know or have you ever been around any or many SEC or SEC level football players? Apparently not. I have. Gear isn't in the culture. The best collective genetics in amateur sports are. The walk-on and kicker don't count. College coaches that I know personally are far more concerned about those athletes pissing hot from weed than testing positive for Dbol. But feel free to believe any level of nonsense if it will facilitate the excuse you need to use as pretext.
DeleteI'm 250, lean, and have never used. However, it takes hard work and knowledge. Two things most people have an aversion to.
I have zero animosity towards people with degrees having a few of them myself, but reading comprehension is rare on the interwebnet thingy.
Agreed and agreed.
ReplyDeleteWomen shouldn't be judged solely based on how they look. They also shouldn't be given an excuse for being out of shape and "fat shaming" is bullshit. You can hold both of those thoughts in your mind at the same time without being intolerant or a misogynist. I have two little girls and if anyone ever tells them that they're worthless because of how they look I'll dump his body in a well but at the same time I'm keeping myself in shape and teaching them about how to eat right and train right because I owe them at much as their father.
Spectacular article, man.
ReplyDeleteAwesome article, Paul!
ReplyDeleteWould love to hear your opinion on the "Dad Bod" movement. ;-)
ReplyDeleteStumbled upon this on facebook, decided to have a little read.
ReplyDeleteSpot on brother, spot on.
I want to punch a wall seeing 'brave' 'courageous' 'stunning' all the fucking time for posts that you described. Fat acceptance movements/Health at any size/... these things are such incredible shit, it's hard to believe this is isn't ridiculed or some organisation of doctors doesn't get a big voice in the media to say it's complete bullshit. I'm a European guy who gets sick of those shitty PC articles by Huffpost and the likes. I like that there are people out there who feel the same.
Good stuff
Thank you for this post. I am only 19 and I live in Denmark where I am SURROUNDED by people who are PC as fuck and almost (superficially at least) condemns people who have a passion for lifting. I agree, my generation CELEBRATES mediocrity and we usually believe that we deserve everything on the merit of existing. This mindset is terrible, and contagious, I am looking so much forward to finishing school this year and going abroad to isolate myself from my foolish peers and work my ass off on learning a marketable skill (Probably programming, UX design and digital marketing) and being focused on training aswell, while blogging about it to improve my writing. My strength or physique is not impressive yet, but I am working on it, funny thing is I only started seeing real results when I shut the fuck up about genetics, roids and 'what program is best' when I started first and foremost applying myself in the gym and eating a lot. It is quite peculiar how people think that roids make THAAAAT big of a difference. This article is quite interesting: http://www.strengtheory.com/steroids-for-strength-sports/
ReplyDeleteAccording to the data analysed, the difference is only 10%. AND anyone on roids STILLL have to work there ass off if not more than before they starting using, because you recover faster/more efficiently (correct me if I am wrong)
A completely different thing, Paul. It would be very interesting if you posted how your outlook on training/dieting has changed since your latest transformation, which I personally found very impressive. Are you still fan of "don't serve two masters", usually only lifting 3 times a week and focusing more on intensity/rep-goals than volume?
"According to the data analysed, the difference is only 10%."
DeleteWhoever wrote that "article" cherrypicked like a MoFo. The two studies showed that the increase in FFM was around 13% in a four-week period. A direct extrapolation of these results to predict the increase over 12 months, or several years, is obviously not possible, but I'd wager it would be a helluva lot more than 13%.
This is, incidentally, the exact same out-of-context approach that fat acceptance advocates use to show how being fat does not impair health.
Steroids help, and they help to such a degree that any comparison between users and non-users is impossible. Juicers have to work their asses off if they're gunning for competitive spots in bodybuilding tournaments, but otherwise they can take roids, do the same amount of work that they do now and see massive improvement. Let's not kid ourselves.
Look at Ronnie or Dorian today, they look smaller and in worse shape than most regular gym goers. They used to be gods. Without synthetic testosterone, juicers are nothing (physique-wise - I don't intend to belittle their personalities or other accomplishments).
Ummmm I just saw Ronnie a few months ago. He still looks great. WTF are you talking about?
DeleteHahaaha slam dunk!! Absolutely enjoyed reading this n have shared it too...finally sm1 who has the balls to call a spade wot it is!!!xx
Delete100% fact in all content. Great blog, keep them coming. To be extraordinary you have to put the EXTRA in the ordinary. Extra work, extra dedication. High five to you for being honest and blunt.
ReplyDeleteAwesome article sir. You deserve a medal for this "brave(!)" action (obvious joke). This epidemic of "being average's cool" is actually not only in fitness industry, but as you stated, in our whole life.
ReplyDelete*I remember my parents were scolding me if I got low marks or if my teachers said bad things about me, nowadays students and parents scold teachers.
*Earning money and paying taxes, having manners, talking polite, waiting on a queue patiently, etc. were common practices and were RIGHT. They were honorable things. Today you are a simpleminded idiot if you pay your taxes fully. Fuck! Even gangsters were classy! WTF happened?
There is a good book that I often recommend to people who aspire to be great. Name is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Anyone here who liked the article should read it (a long read, mind you, but worth it.)
Keep it up Mr Carter!
It takes a special person to combine Ayn Rand and the regular payment of taxes in the same sentence.
DeleteShould I take this comment, especially the "special person" part, as an insult or a compliment? =)
DeleteAnyway thank you, sir! Wish you long days and good nights!
I was reading this going how the hell can he call Ronda Rousey a fat chick til I got to actual model he was referring to. Makes a lot of sense after that
ReplyDeleteFuck yes! You've out into words what I've been thinking and feeling for ages.
ReplyDeleteFuck average
Great article! Wish more people would wake the hell up and get out of this "mediocrity is greatness" mindset. You speak the truth, Sir! Well done!
ReplyDeleteThat Neil Peart parenthetical was awesome :)
ReplyDeleteBravo, Audie Murphy ...agree with each and every word
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing!!
ReplyDeleteAmericans have a narcissist need to receive the acceptance of strangers and be envied. This is taught to us through the role models put in front of us by the mass media each day. At the same time, we're lazy, not gifted or talented enough to achieve the things that media puts in front of us. Therefore, the acceptance of mediocrity is done to lower standards, so that our narcissist need to feel special and idolized is fulfilled as we live vicariously through people like plus size models, auto-tuned singers, and reality TV stars. The common denominator, and the underlying problem isn't fat acceptance or acceptance of mediocrity. I think the problem is the fact that we have this narcissistic need for public acceptance to begin with. You're right, people shouldn't be lied to and told that we're all winners, and so you get to take the cake and eat it too, and be an overweight winner. But even if we stopped fat acceptance and the general acceptance of mediocrity, there still shouldn't be so much need for the acceptance of strangers to begin with. Society props up the outspoken, narcissistic, self-promoting people to the forefront whether or not they really deserve to be examples of our society. Cue Donald Trump, Kanye West, or Charlie Sheen. Our Facebooks and Instagrams are plastered with people at the top of their game whether they're fit, rich, good looking, funny, or intelligent. I'm not saying that we should all disconnect our TVs, Facebook, and Instagrams. Instead, I'm saying that while we should teach our children and family what it takes to succeed, we should also teach our children and families what true acceptance, love, and success are, and make sure they understand that they will be loved and accepted regardless of whether they achieve success in the materialistic things in life. Because really, when it all comes down to it, even the models who do deserve to be on the cover of SI haven't really achieved much. They have a tiny waste, but what have they done for her children. A basketball player can put a ball through a hoop, but what has he done for his community. That QB may have a nice throw, but does how does he treat his wife.
ReplyDeleteBasically, what I'm saying is that a fat person shouldn't need to look at another fat person on the cover of a magazine or on tv to feel good about themselves. Replace fat with poor, unintelligent, ugly, or untalented and the statement still works. These people who have that need for acceptance probably have issues with shame that they need to deal with.
Love this article. Thank you for putting my thoughts into very accurate words lol
ReplyDeleteAwesome article, I am so glad someone finally said that. You wrote what I was thinking inside for all these years.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big girl working my ass off to lose the extra pounds I've lost over 60lbs in the past year and a bit because i dont do well with mediocrity. I actually appreciate the harsh truth in this article its just kicked my ass to go in even harder! Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm a big girl doing everything i can not to be anymore. I appreciate the harsh truth here because i get where this is coming from. Ive lost over 60lbs in a year and a bit and this article has kicked my ass to hit it harder. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDabney, you are awesome! Be proud of your progress and continue to kick ass!
Deletefuck fat people. I'm actively cutting shitty lazy shits from my life so they're laziness doesn't rub off on me
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fucking BRILLIANT Sir!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Fucking BRILLIANT Sir!
ReplyDeleteI worked hard, lost weight, gained muscle, got damn healthy. No more meds for a slipped disc injury that is permanent. Got turned in to human resources from my "concerned co-workers" for being anorexic (they were, of course, overweight). Got a note from my doctor that I wasn't anorexic. Left that job and left those people. Post pictures of my back on Facebook and get comments about how I have too much muscle for a woman and it's not for them. It's not meant for them, it's for me and it keeps me from having live with pain and meds. I was also asked if I was using steroids because of the way I look now. Oh, thanks. I bust my butt every day to look like this, but it can only be done by taking something...don't give me any credit. To me, it seems you are accepted more if you are overweight, being healthy has become the minority.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You have said everything I've been wanting to say and more! More importantly, I've never laughed so much (while reading a blog) in my entire life! Oh I love this and your style! #SorryNotSorry #Truth #NeededThis
ReplyDeleteWhat a rad on point article. Good read all around. Couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteRad article, good read. On point like a mother fucker.
ReplyDeletePaul you are now officially one of my heros two thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteperfect writter ..its a `pleasure see this in the profile page of jason h in fb and come here and check complete ..hope more people bve honest like U ..regards
ReplyDeleteI like what you've said here.. It's BOLD, especially since it will be bombarded with negative commentary from those it refers to in many places and in a few different connotations.... But pussyfooting around the issue never breaks any ground.
ReplyDeleteI am not 100% clean, but I'm itching to get back in the gym after post injury surgery - because I care about my health, physique and the role model I am to my daughter.
I am guilty though, guilty of telling someone they are great when there is more they can do. I have before told my wife she has "dysmorphic thoughts" about herself - she lost 28lbs and still thought she was obese (the reality is her ideal weight would have only required losing another 14lbs) and I was too caught up telling her she looked great and didn't have to be so driven because she was not in the poor shape she branded herself as being in...
I was wrong... And I thank you for helping me figure that out.
My labelling of her 'dysmorphic thoughts' was my inability to see parity with her goal and drive not to accept mediocrity, my underestimation and acceptance of mediocrity on her behalf and harshly advocated to her without complete understanding of the damage I could cause. I love my wife and thought her drive was making her unhappy with herself - not that unhappiness with herself would promote drive for betterment.
When people see past the harsh terms you've used which will give them rise to chant about how un-PC you are, only then will they be able to put self analysis to the test and root out the stinking BS they live by..
Thanks... You've done what a real blog is supposed to do - Teach...

ReplyDeletePaul, absolutely enjoyed reading your post. You have an awesome wit about you and a pretty wicked writing style that makes for easy reading.
ReplyDeleteI agree with pretty much everything you've said here re: society celebrating mediocrity, the feminising of men, unhealthy overweight people being labelled brave and courageous just for doing nothing etc.
Out of curiosity. If this trend of glorifying "the average" continues upward and onwards what do you see happening to society? Do you believe more and more people will be overweight and fat just because it will be more accepted?
Personally I believe the smart ones will always want to look after their body and be healthy. They will raise their kids with the same health ethics as themselves.
The fat ones will continue to be fat and the sheep/uneducated will succumb to this type of propaganda. They'll just wipe themselves from the gene pool through diabetes, hypertension, heart disease etc.
I think for the most part the healthy people will always win this war regardless of how much the media wants to now celebrate unhealthy people.
Great article will read again and will share!
ReplyDeleteMiddle aged mom here (thanks Facebook for the lead). I'm loving the dichotomy between your writing style and your love of CS Lewis(that man is an amazing writer for sure...what a mind!)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I agree with you 98%. The only error in your post is that Bruce Jenner (a he, not a she!) was cross dressing even in his first marriage in his immediate post-olympic days...it was a big factor in his divorce and long before reality TV.
I also wanted to note what an incongruity with the plus size model mania: these models, aside from having beautiful faces, have an hourglass shape and a relatively flat belly for their size (Aside from Tess). You don't see any models with big, drooping bellies, with copious back fat, or with extreme cellulite. Know why? Because there IS a standard of beauty...so it's a bit incongruous to be told to widen our scope of what constitutes beauty, when the fashionistas really are not. This leads to another point about "curves": Kim Kardashian would have curves whether she weighed 100lbs or 160lbs because of her waist to hip ratio. I have the hips of a 12 year old boy, so the only shape I get if I gain weight is "round."
Also, I do really appreciate different kinds of beauty, so I have no problem with SI showcasing different fit models; whether they are tiny asian women, traditional SI models, or the more booty types like Beyonce....but I am strongly against fat acceptance and the big national lovefest for mediocrity.
Thanks for your post. What it lacked in eloquence, it made up with percepetion and honesty.
I'm so glad I was a kid in the 1980s. I grew up with He-Man, Arnold, Stallone, Dolph and Van Damme. Those early heroes continue to drive my pursuit of physical awesomeness. And when I see a freak like Mariusz Pudzianowski, I don't think "it's teh roidz"....I want to push myself harder, to be better. Who wants to settle for average????
ReplyDeleteloled so hard
ReplyDeleteAnd what she said: http://youtu.be/vdiNwylLGH4
ReplyDeleteNow, Paul, you could be a nice guy but I'm not sorry if this also applies to you:
ReplyDeleteEverything you say in this article about women who abuse food could be said about men who abuse steroids. Neither is healthy and neither should absolutely be role model material. Both are highly delusional and should be allowed free therapy and neither are positive contributions to society in the least.
Malala Yousafzai - that is fucking inspiration right there, not this Kardashian bullshit.
ReplyDeleteMalala Yousafzai - that is fucking inspiration right there...not this Kardashian bullshit.
ReplyDeletePhysical, artistic and intellectual mediocrity scare me to death, because they're right there waiting, surrounding me, supported by the millions of others who have already succumbed to them and want to pull others down.
ReplyDeleteLuckily in 2016 we can choose the media we consume, so it's no longer the magazine publisher or TV network's responsibility, it's ours. Those who want to feel better and really sink into their mushy mediocrity are free to do so, while those who are far beyond driven can consume media that pushes them and challenges them. Stuff (LRB) that makes them take action.
Great article as usual Paul. But the millenial angle is stupid. None of these problems started with millenials. They are out new easy scapegoats but cmon, did they start this trend? They have their own faults, but the people you are talking about arent 22.
ReplyDeleteI agree so much, what is wrong with working hard and being fit? People get into their feelings about everything but the truth is the truth.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you use your time to think about yourself? Maybe you need to try to figure out why you are so angry about ppl being diferente than what you think they should be.Who you think you are?Ppl will be as they want and that is not ups to you! I din't read all of that because is so superficial and confused, but the part i did sounds like someone who was forced to get in to model, or became something that you were not, just to be accept and now you feel like everybody need to do the same. You talk about health, have you think about your mental health? Go see a psychoanalyst dude!
ReplyDeleteYour message: Dead on.
ReplyDeleteYour tone: People generally catch more flies with honey than vinegar. But you're obviously living up to meathead stereotypes, so whatever.
Your observation on CEOs: dead wrong and preying on stereotypes. That's why I'm writing. Here's some facts about income inequality:
1. The amount of money that was given out in bonuses on Wall Street last year is twice the amount all minimum-wage workers earned in the country combined.
2. Since 1990, CEO compensation has increased by 300%. Corporate profits have doubled. The average worker’s salary has increased 4%. Adjusted for inflation, the minimum wage has actually decreased.
3. The super rich .01% of America, such as Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan, take home a whopping 6% of the national income, earning around $23 million a year. Compare that to the average $30,000 a year earned by the bottom 90 percent of America.
Income inequality is real. You may want to believe that the system is fair, and we should all just buck the fuck up, but the system really isn't. It's been tilting against the average American for some time now.
Meanwhile, screw SI and Ashley Graham and fat acceptance. Not in my lifetime.

ReplyDeleteWhy cant you love yourself, yet still be unsatisfied with yourself. Thats the main issue, I love myself for sure but certainly need to work on myself physically and mentally. You shouldnt have to hate yourself because your fat, you also shouldnt use your fatness as a badge of courage either. There are far more important things that truly matter other than being fat or fit for that matter.
ReplyDeletePaul, what showed up in your blood work over a year ago that freaked you out?
ReplyDeleteEverything. When your doc goes "I don't see how these readings are possible." you know it's in the shitter. And no, it wasn't drugs. I've never ever been a big cycle guy. In fact I was and am still on a replacement dose of test. It was a lot of things. Life stress included.
DeleteThank you. More people need to call out this dreadful mindset and pushing plus sizes in our faces. It isn't that difficult to be healthy and active.
ReplyDeleteThose are beauty and fashion media (including SI Swimsuit), not fitness media. And beauty and fashion have never been about courage or dedication. Unless you think Rita Hayworth and Charro just outworked everyone.
ReplyDeleteBut spot on about Neil Peart. Also, you think "one man can't possibly use ALL this equipment". And then ... yep. He does. #kyyz
While your post is excellent for a variety of reasons I will focus on one thought. I must say that I find steroid use just as disgusting. When I look at a steroid body I am sick. Just as sick as when I look at fat people and anorexic people. Unhealthy is unhealthy. Unhealthy is NOT attractive. NOT sexy. NOT inspiring or inspired.
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that steroids serve a myriad of medical purposes from helping burn victims to recovery faster to giving people with AIDS or HIV a higher quality of life don't you?
DeleteBest and most honest post i've read about "body image movements". What a load of bullshit. I know someone who uses it as a preface just to make herself feel good and is still fat as fuck because she's too fucking lazy to do anything about it. These bunch of losers go out there and spread their bullshit advice to the rest of the world and let other people think that its ok to be mediocre and that everyone else is as such.
ReplyDeleteIts bullshit and I totally agree with you. We accept mediocrity too easily in this world today because its the easy way out.
Nice post
