Thoughts about life, crap, training, and stuff

Well I hope that gets that shit out of the way.  hah!

In case you haven't liked my Facebook page, then you suck and would not have seen that I put up a link from a site that did a REVIEW on Strength, Life, Legacy.  I also want to thank all you bros and chics that have mailed me and told me how much it resonated with you.  I wanted this to be more than a training book.  I wanted it to be something that could help people focus on strengthening their life, and who they are.  A Facebook friend, Ramesh, sent me a link that has quotes from an old Indian Philosopher named Swami Vivekananda.  His philosophies so closely resemble mine.

“Strength is Life, Weakness is Death.
Expansion is Life, Contraction is Death.
Love is Life, Hatred is Death.”
― Swami Vivekananda

To expand on this, I will be doing a 10 part series on being a lifter, and what each part of that code means to me, how I arrived there, and even more on why it's important not to break your own code once you make it.  Both for lifting and life.  I personally think this will be my best series ever for the blog.

So MENS TANKS are available now!  Obviously I was wearing one in the pic from the little meet.  I am NOT going to do a reorder on these because it's a "summer special" if you will.  So grab one quick while you can.  I sold some at the meet so I do not have a lot left.  They do run a little big, however they are 100% cotton so it will shrink a LOT after a wash.  Thus, I only got large, XL, and 2L.  So if you need a medium, get a large because it will shrink to a medium after a wash.  You get the idea.

Summer only

I am working with Phil Stevens from IronRadio about doing some seminars.  Phil is travelling out to California to do a 2-day seminar in a few weeks and we will start lining up clients from there.  If you know or are a gym owner and are interested contact me about it and we can discuss the details.  The seminar would cover squat and bench on day 1, deadlift and all assistance and conditioning on day 2.

Not a lot to write this morning because I'm behind, and I'm pouring most of my mental and creative energy into the Lifer series.

I hope everyone did something worth talking about this weekend.

  1. Dude, finally saw The Grey last night. Utterly epic movie. My wife cried about ten times, and I almost had some man tears with all those flashback scenes to his wife. For Neeson to shoot that film so close to his own wife's death is so insane. The dialogue was incredible.

Not sure if you've seen 21 Jump Street, but its insanely funny.

Who you got this weekend for Silva/Sonnen II? I've got Silva, 3rd round TKO, but not before Sonnen works him just a bit. Also, I've got Tito beating Forrest; not sure why, but nostalgia just wants a win for Tito.

  2. Hey Paul, book is awesome read it in about 35 minutes last friday. Thank you for that. Quick question, its summer, its fucking CRAZY humid and hot here in SC. And a buddy and I on saturdays (sprint day) and tuesday (prowler or drag sled) do some conditioning.

We have done a ton of different sprint workouts so far like 20 y cone drill, random yardage patterns, start and stop stuff. But we are running out of things to kick our shit in (been doing this for about 5 weeks now so our motors are better). You got any real dick kicker sprint workouts you like to do? We do all this post heavy lower body days. if that helps any.

  3. Paul, I bought your book and I have a question for you. I still didn't hit the intermediate level (using your definitions from the book), and I've been pushing PRs on the big3 for the last 6 weeks (for 1-3reps). The thing is that it's killing my low back. And in the book you say that's not a very good idea.

So now I'm trying to be smart with my programming. I was thinking about running one of your modified 5/3/1 template or the short strong-15 for the big3 (in both cases I'll be using high volume assistance and training 4x/week). I also have a nice caloric surplus, since I'm kinda skinny. What do you think?

Also, the book is great, and it's now my "training guide".

    1. If it's killing your low back then it's time to back off. Remember what I wrote about hitting PR's and then falling off the cliff? You're there.

Take some time off until the back feels recovered and run the strong-15 for the big-3. I'd go with the man-maker split to save the low back.

  4. Will do that! Last week I trained on Tuesday, and I'm off since then. I'll take this week off too. So, if next week I'm feeling good, I'll start the strong-15.

    Thanks.

  6. Jesus titty christ Paul,

I told you to go try the Jack Daniels Honey because it's for people who don't like whiskey. Fuck, it's like 60 proof and infused with honey and everyone I know who has tried it, loved it. So do me a favor and stop bitching about annoying posters. I'm not fucking retarded. I know that you don't like whiskey, hence my recommendation for something I'm pretty sure you'll like. Fuck!

    2. I'd be willing to send you a bottle of it, not that I'm into you or anything. Apparently I have to tell the USPS it's "vinegar."

skip to 0:14 to skip all the supplement bullshit. It seems all Russians love that lift for everything, be it delt building or Oly lifting.

BTW that kid is the only legit bodybuilder that can claim to be strong as he looks. He reps out 500 pound bench press weeks before a bodybuilding show during his diet and is said to squat in the 600's for reps.

What are they giving to the kids of this new generation of lifters ? There's George Leeman, there's DeltaOne, and there's this guy. Shit.

    1. That fella is quite big.

And not meaning to be disrespectful, but Leeman doesn't deserve to be thrown in with anyone until he actually does a meet or a strongman competition.

  8. Shawnee Indian; Tecumseh from Act of Valor

So live your life so the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their views, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a stranger if in a lonely place. Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life and strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself. Touch not the poisonous firewater that makes wise ones turn to fools and robs them of their visions. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

  10. Paul, I have a question about the strong-15. I`m going to run it for my deadlift, which my best is 250 (not good, I know). So I'm thinking about setting my goal to 275. Is that too much?
    Thanks.

    2. Context is sometimes lost in messaging or words.

I didn't mean my "what do you think?" as smart ass, more like a "do you think that would be wise, or too much?" In other words, have some introspection about it.

If your max is 250, I'd program in 260 for the final phase, then work back on the other 2 phases (93, 85%) like I always program.

    3. Sorry about that. I misinterpreted you.

Will program for 260 for the third phase.
      Thanks.

  12. Hey, Paul, I think you should make a LRB beetus-themed t-shirt or some other beetus-merch! Preferably with a stache involved in some way. Speaking of which, I def think Lemmy sports a respectable mustache, it's actually awesome. He has the beetus though.
