Thoughts about life, crap, training and stuff....

Boy talk about a boring ass UFC card.  I about fell asleep, for real, during the Rashad vs Jones fight.  The only thing of note about the whole card was the Schaub knockout.  Otherwise, a very forgettable card.  Still not a fan of Jones, and my take on him that he has zero power was further cemented when after he hit Evans in the face with an elbow, he nailed him with a clean 1-2 right on the chin, and Rashad just looked at him.  Glad to see Hendo is going to get a shot.

Watched the new Mission Impossible movie over the weekend.  I enjoyed it, even though it did get a little "Die Hardish" on me, with the amount of abuse Cruise was able to take, and just get up and walk away like nothing had happened.  These things kind of irk me a little bit in movies, as I really prefer a little more realism when it comes to shit like that.  You can't go zip lining down a cable, fall onto a moving truck, then bounce off and land on concrete and get up and walk away, like you fell off of the neighbors trampoline.

Well the weekends are my big eating weekends for IF and I did some "cheating" yesterday.  I ate a whole lemon cake, a whole pan of Enchiladas, rice, and 4 bowls of chocolate peanut butter ice cream.  I repeated this throughout the day for the most part.  I cut off eating at 8 and fell asleep at 9.  I think I'm starting to get used to this.  I was heavier this morning (247) after being down to 237 a couple of days ago, but that's to be expected.  First week is in the books and I really like this way of eating.

We did the Chaos and Bang Your Ears podcast yesterday.  Ran about an hour and a half.  We didn't get around to all questions but I am going to try and go back through there and answer anything that we didn't go over.  Also, the podcast had a few burps, so we had to start and stop a few times, so feel free to overlook that if you please.

My pec minor and shoulder are really not doing well, so I will be doing lots of flyes and cuff work the next few weeks to get that back in order.  Because benching was going so well, I got kind of side tracked about what I needed to be doing to keep myself healthy, and ended up where I used to when I benched too much.  Shoulder and pec killing me.  It's the repping that generally gets me.  With singles I tend to be ok, but if I start repping on the bench, it'll bite me down the line.  With incline, I don't have this issue for the most part.  So I am going to rearrange things to do inclines, bench for singles, and snatch grip PBN as my staple movements, rotating each pressing day.  I plan on doing standing overheads after bench for reps, and seated db press after inclines.  That's the plan anyway.  We'll see how it goes starting this week.

This coming weekend I am going out to see my buddy Phil Stevens and we are going to have a deadlift for reps competition with 500.  He has another guy joining us as well.  Phil runs the Strength Guild and does Iron Radio and is an all around awesome guy.  He's also a great deadlifter so I expect to get my ass handed to me, but I will give it my best.

Short one.  It's Monday.

  1. hey Paul, i remember a year or two ago you went off all protein shakes and said you felt better without them/didnt feel you needed them (i think you were talking in a fatloss context though).
i suppose your thoughts on this have changed, i'd love to know a bit more on this.
    thanks man

    1. Same.

I don't think you need them at all, but as my schedule and my wife's schedule changed it just became far more convenient to use them again. My choice would be food for every meal. My rant is mainly about guys who go to shakes, and their whole diet is complete shit.

    2. Not going to lie, that may have been me yesterday. Nothing but proteinshakes and peanut butter jelly sandwiches.

    3. Dude if I could get away with it, that would be my staple diet 24/7.

  2. Agree with you 100% about the UFC card, with the exception of the Rory MacDonald kid from Canada who absolutely pummeled Che Mills. Jon Jones legs look like toothpicks, it's annoying to me.

  3. Gosh, how did I forget to mention rory, who I am a big fan of.

I think Rory is going to supplant GSP at that 170 spot if/when someone does.

    1. Most definitely, that kid is sick and he's only 22. That Mills dude didn't stand a chance.

Man, I have been doing the IF diet for a couple months now and have trimmed up nicely, pretty quickly actually. Used a decent thermogenic and cut WAY back on carbs as well. I relate to the feeling you wrote about not too long ago about runnig out of gas/hittis the wall halfway through the workout. Feel agood, healthty energy and less "bogged" down kinda. Also cut out booze damn near altogether, only partaking on occasion, so that helps.

    2. My take from everything I have read, is that this is not a "get lean quick" diet, but more of a body recomp where you get lean slowly, but retain as much lean muscle as possible. This seems more ideal to me. So I plan on giving it a decent run.

  4. Yeah for sure, I plan on doing the same. I felt the adjustment of my body getting used to less carbs on a regular basis or whatever--kinda had like carb craving feelings at first, but after that it hasn't been bad. Feel like my will power has gotten stronger too, strange but true.

  5. For me the highlight of the card was the McDonalds. Rory has already been mentioned as a stud, but that 135er Michael who pounded Torres (who admittedly got screwed to even have to face McDonald) is awesome. The guy is smiley and hilarious. Did you hear him talk about sweets afterwards. I loved it. That guy seems to have more fun than anyone out there.

    1. True. But the overall card sucked. I think anytime you have a snooze fest main event it kind of takes away from the card a bit.

  6. Paul, have you seen A Bittersweet Life? its definitely worth watching, its in korean though. If you can put up with reading subs watch Oldboy, I Saw the Devil and The Good the Bad and the Weird aswell.
Ive heard good things about Animal Kingdom too, havent had a chance to watch it yet though.

  7. Paul,

Have you thought about arranging your back off bench work like your squatting? As in paused 3x3 or 2x5? I wonder if it would be less stressful on your joints than just repping out for a single set?

Just curious. I'd been meaning to ask since I feel the bench and squat are quite similar (the biceps/hamstrings shortens on one end while lengthening on the other to stabilize throughout and store tension). Thoughts?

Thanks for getting me to pause squat, btw. I added them at your suggestion, and I'm fairly certain that I'm now the awesomest person I know as a result. Well maybe not, but they've helped my bottom position a ton.

    1. Heavier low rep is even worse for me on bench. The best thing I can do is stick to a single, then do the back offs on incline. That's the only way I have found to keep my pec minor from getting bad.

Awesome to hear about the pause squats. They always work.

    2. I like the idea of using inline for back-off actually. I've wanted to switch to close grip, but worry about wrecking my left shoulder on amrap sets backing off - I'll give this a shot with my next strong-15 cycle.

Also, do you ever do GHD's? They do, for my hamstrings, what pause squats do for my glutes. I've seen some interesting ways to build make-shift gdh setups for garage gyms. (here's one that's cool but expensive: http://orlandobarbell.com/store/home-glute-ham-raise/)

    3. Yes I have a setup for those. Check my youtube channel. Made a vid about it.

    4. Paul,

Have you talked to your PT about your pec like you did your hip?

    5. That's how I met her years ago. :)

Pec is healing up. I have been treating it and the shoulder with flyes and cuff work and it's gettin better.

  8. Eat a lemon cake on the way here Paul it will help, We also tend to always have about 4 dozen doughnuts in the gym.

I am the same as you and most lifters I know are, the only thing that wont aggravate them on bench is limited the volume at heavy loads. I think its a lot to do with the complexity of the shoulder joint and musculature as well just the smaller bones / tendons etc involved. Even with a Bad hip I can go heavy on squat and limit the volume and find some semblance of a pain free life but when something in the upper body is acting up from benching its not the same. Load Just bothers it and just time away really limiting the volume tends yo heal it. That's when I really go to OH pressing I have never really had a problem with that during any-times my fibromangina was flaring up.

See ya in a few days should be fun or at the least make good video.
