Notes - Threw in a vid for everything I did. Just in case anyone wondered, which I'm sure you didn't.
Was tired as hell, so this was good. Tired as hell is how I generally feel when it's time to pull at the meet. So being tired and pulling is a good thing.
635 moved easy. Feeling good about my chances here.
That was a fucking fast lockout for how difficult it initially looked like it was going to be.
ReplyDeleteIs that your daughter's bar on the blocks in the last two vids? How's her training coming?
She's doing awesome. Pulled a bunch of doubles with 135 and also pulled 145 as well. Her dead is going to be pretty good.
DeleteI fear for the 16 year old boy who shows up at your house.......
ReplyDeletePaul, what kind of shoes do you squat in? I like the sambas, I think, but just wondering why you don't use lifting shoes.
Keep up the steller work man.
I do wear lifting shoes. I have some vs Oly lifting shoes. But I may get some new ones.
DeleteTotal noob here. Just wondering that in all of the 3 videos your mixed grip is the same. Do you not switch it or just make sure you end up with your preferred variant on the top set of each exercise?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Always right hand in supinated grip, left hand over the top.
DeletePaul! Killed it, congratulations. Loved the title of this post, the whole f'n show! They used to say that on ECW! Thanks for the videos, I moved my stance closer as a result of them and weights seem easier and I feel more stable. Grip question. My limiting factor has been my grip (newer deadlifter). I think this is better than limiting factor being your back since the grip will give out before your back. However, i need to get the grip stronger. I start out with hook grip until the weight gets fairly heavy (for me). I then alternate between alternate grips, one time left under right over, and then reverse. I'm right handed but not super coordinated so I don't have a super dominant hand. My grip of choice would be right under. However it seems on occasion i can get a tighter setup the other way. At times however it's akin to jerking off left handed and feels weird. Do you see people using hook grip while alternating? Whatever hand that is under is the one that will open up for me. I'm still working on finding my balance in back angle also to get leg drive but not squating the weight up (hips higher/lower). Any thoughts? Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteSam
Most people I see pick one or the other. I'd just stick with one for a while, whichever feels the most comfortable and strongest, and go with it.
DeleteLots of grip work there Paul. Do you ever have any problems with callusses? They are manly, but I only ask because the lady doesn't like em.
ReplyDeleteI actually tore one on my right hand as I finished the shrugs.
DeleteI do in fact try to file them down and take care of them to keep them from ripping.
If the lady doesn't like em, file em down and use some lotion. That'll help.
Maybe this is common knowledge to everyone, but for what it's worth I picked up some great advice regarding calluses from Rippetoe. Basically, any move where your hands pull the bar towards you (including squats), make sure the bar is in your fingers and not your palm, and just the opposite for pushing the bar. This keeps the knurling from smushing into that fleshy area at the top of the palm just under the first finger joint where the worst calluses form.
DeleteDamn, looking good Paul.

Hi Paul,
ReplyDeleteI know you don't think of yourself as a great deadlifter, but holy shit, that is impressive. Keep working hard! How many more weeks do you have left?
Zac
4 more deadlift workouts.
DeleteThanks for the props, but when I can rip 700 off the floor with no problem I will consider myself an ok deadlifter.
Just my own standards.
Where was the video for the curls?
ReplyDeleteI didn't do no stinkin curls!
DeletePaul,
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your home gym equipment? Mainly your barbell, bench, and dumbbell handles? Looking to pickup some myself.
The barbells I bought locally. I have three bars. All bent, but two of which are good and 1 is shitty. I have a cambered bar, and a small 35 pound bar (it's bent too LOL). The dumbbell handles I got from Ironmind/Milo. But I am thinking about getting something new because they are too much trouble to readjust if I want to make them different sizes.
Deletethat 635 look pretty easy and fast
ReplyDeleteFelt like it. Everything still feels fine. So my planning has been pretty good.
DeleteI am thinking about doing a bodypart specialization phase while on the Big-15. Are these compatible? Should it be done? Thanks man.
ReplyDeleteJohn
Yes it can be done. With some adjustments. It all depends on what you want to specialize on.
DeleteHey Paul,
ReplyDeleteWhy do you do the shrugs for such high reps? Was reading some of Jamie Lewis's older posts earlier, and I believe the exact quote was "if you're doing more than 5 reps, you're doing the wrong fucking exercise."
Thoughts?
Because it's at the end of the session and I don't feel like piling plates back on to do em.
DeleteAnd high reps have great benefits as well.
